Description: The availability of measures to operationalize allostatic load—the cumulative toll on the body of responding to stressor demands—in population health surveys may differ across years or surveys, hampering analyses on the entire sampled population. In this study, the impacts of variable selection and calculation method were evaluated to generate an allostatic load index applicable across all cycles of the Canadian Health Measures Survey (CHMS). CHMS data were used to compare individual and population-level changes in scores for allostatic load indexes in which other commonly used measures were substituted for waist-to-hip ratio. Associations between the various constructs and indicators of socioeconomic position were then assessed to evaluate whether relationships were maintained across indexes.

Description: This public use microdata file (PUMF) provides researchers access to data on the distribution of SARS-CoV-2 lineages detected in the Canadian provinces between May and September 2022. Samples were collected as part of the Canadian COVID-19 Antibody and Health Survey (CCAHS), Cycle 2. The PUMF file consists of a subset of participants of the CCAHS who submitted a positive PCR saliva sample over the course of the collection of the survey. The PUMF contains select demographic information including sex at birth, age group, province and the week of collection. The file also contains SARS-CoV-2 whole genome sequences and its associated data.

Description: The Canadian Health Measures Survey (CHMS) Cycle 1 oral health public use microdata file (PUMF) is now available. The PUMF consists of 307 variables from the oral health examination completed as part the CHMS, a subset of variables present or recoded from the master file. Data was collected from 2007 to 2009 from approximately 6,000 people in 15 communities randomly selected across Canada and represents 97% of the Canadian population aged 6 to 79 years old. The Oral Health module of the CHMS is a result of a collaborative partnership between three federal departments: Statistics Canada, Health Canada and the Department of National Defence.

Multilevel time series (MTS) models are applied to estimate trends in time series of antenatal care coverage at several administrative levels in Bangladesh, based on repeated editions of the Bangladesh Demographic and Health Survey (BDHS) within the period 1994-2014. MTS models are expressed in an hierarchical Bayesian framework and fitted using Markov Chain Monte Carlo simulations. The models account for varying time lags of three or four years between the editions of the BDHS and provide predictions for the intervening years as well. It is proposed to apply cross-sectional Fay-Herriot models to the survey years separately at district level, which is the most detailed regional level. Time series of these small domain predictions at the district level and their variance-covariance matrices are used as input series for the MTS models. Spatial correlations among districts, random intercept and slope at the district level, and different trend models at district level and higher regional levels are examined in the MTS models to borrow strength over time and space. Trend estimates at district level are obtained directly from the model outputs, while trend estimates at higher regional and national levels are obtained by aggregation of the district level predictions, resulting in a numerically consistent set of trend estimates.

The Canadian Health Measures Survey (CHMS) is a repeating, cross-sectional survey that selects two members of a household-a child and a randomly selected older member of the household aged 12 to 79 years-with at least one child aged 3 to 11 years in residence. These paired respondent records, available in the CHMS relationship files, provide unique opportunities to researchers interested in examining associations between two members of the same household for health behaviours and outcomes. This paper highlights the unique features, recommendations for use and research potential of paired data in the CHMS relationship files.

The Internet publication, Mental Health and Well-being, from the 2002 Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS) provides cross-sectional estimates at provincial and national levels. Topics include the prevalence of various mental disorders (depression, mania, panic disorder, agoraphobia, social phobia), mental health problems (alcohol and illicit drug dependence, gambling, suicide, eating trouble) and access to and use of mental health care services in the past 12 months.

The survey also collects information on many determinants and correlates of mental health such as socio-demographic information, income, stress, medication use and social support.

Data were collected from close to 37,000 respondents, aged 15 or older, residing in households in each province.

The main objective of the 2002 Youth Smoking Survey (YSS) is to provide current information on the smoking behaviour of students in grades 5 to 9 (in Quebec primary school grades 5 and 6 and secondary school grades 1 to 3), and to measure changes that occurred since the last time the survey was conducted in 1994. Additionally, the 2002 survey collected basic data on alcohol and drug use by students in grades 7 to 9 (in Quebec secondary 1 to 3). Results of the Youth Smoking Survey will help with the evaluation of anti-smoking and anti-drug use programs, as well as with the development of new programs.

The Canadian Survey on Disability (CSD) is a national survey of Canadians aged 15 and over whose everyday activities are limited because of a long-term condition or health-related problem.

The 2012 CSD Concepts and Methods Guide is designed to assist data users by providing relevant information on survey content and concepts, sampling design, collection methods, data processing, data quality and product availability. Chapter 1 of this guide provides an overview of the 2012 CSD by introducing the survey's background and objectives. Chapter 2 explains the key concepts and definitions and introduces the indicators measured by the CSD questionnaire modules. Chapters 3 to 6 cover important aspects of survey methodology, from sampling design to data collection and processing. Chapters 7 and 8 cover issues of data quality, including the approaches used to minimize and correct errors throughout all stages of the survey. The National Population Health Survey (NPHS) is a family of surveys with multiple objectives, one of which is to provide information on a panel of people who will be followed over time to reflect the dynamic process of health and illness. Data for the first cycle of the NPHS - Households Survey were collected from June 1994 to June 1995, and were released in September 1995. Data for the second cycle were collected from June 1996 to August 1997. One of the primary outputs for the second cycle is a longitudinal master file. This paper will describe six major strategies that were developed to process the longitudinal master file.
