The Aboriginal Population Profile presents information on the Aboriginal identity population from the 2011 National Household Survey (NHS). Data are provided for selected standard geographic areas including Canada, provinces and territories, census divisions, census subdivisions (including Indian reserves, Indian settlements and Inuit communities), census metropolitan areas and census agglomerations, as well as geographic areas such as Indian band areas, Inuit regions and Métis settlements associated with Aboriginal peoples (also known as Aboriginal geographies).

The migration data are released annually from a modelled databank that monitors and tracks the movements of people to and within Canada. Data are derived from the comparison of two consecutive years of tax files. Most current data show migration between 2011 and 2012.

Data on international migration and internal migration are generally available 15 to 18 months after the tax filing deadline.

The data consist of estimates of migration flows between census divisions (CDs) or census metropolitan areas (CMAs), by sex and broad age groups. Information may be requested by province of origin/destination, by age group, by type of migration (interprovincial, intraprovincial and international) and sex; and for migration flows by census division of origin/destination, or by census metropolitan area/non-census metropolitan area of origin/destination. The statistics are derived from the annual tax file provided by the Canada Revenue Agency.

Note: Intraprovincial migration: movement of people between two CDs or CMAs located within the same province. The CD/CMA of departure is the CD/CMA of origin and the CD/CMA of arrival is the CD/CMA of destination. Interprovincial migration: movement of people between CDs and CMAs located in two different provinces. The province of departure is the province of origin and the province of arrival is the province of destination. International migration: movement of people between an area in Canada and another country. Migration flows: migration flows for any given CD or CMA. The flows are listed in descending order of net migration for the most recent year of migration.

On each of the days of release, profile component data will be available for particular topics at the Canada, province/territory, census division and census subdivision levels. An emerging area of subjective well-being (SWB) research is centered on the differences in the levels of SWB both across countries and among geographic regions within a country. The consideration of geographic differences would extend our knowledge about the determinants of SWB from "internal" factors of personality traits and individuals' socio-demographic characteristics to "external factors" embedded in individuals' environments. An issue with important theoretical and policy implications is whether the income of others in the same geographic area is associated with individuals' SWB. The association could be positive if people benefit from the improved resources, amenities, and social capital in high-income areas. The association could also be negative if people tend to emulate the lifestyles of their more affluent neighbours. Related empirical studies so far have not come to a consensus on this question.

The present study attempts to contribute to this issue in two significant ways. First, this study examines whether the effect of the average income in a geographic area (locality income) on SWB is sensitive to the scale of geographic units. With a very large sample of survey respondents nested within three hierarchical levels of geographic areas, this study provides reliable estimates of the association of SWB with average incomes in immediate neighbourhoods (defined as "census dissemination areas"), local communities ("census tracts"), and municipalities ("census subdivisions"). Second, this study examines how the choice of control variables influences the estimated effect of locality income. By considering the effects of individual demographic and socioeconomic characteristics, self-evaluated general health, and area-level attributes in a sequential manner, it is possible to discuss the likely mechanisms through which locality income is related to individuals' SWB.

(b) Economic Regions and Census Divisions, 2001 - Shows the economic region (ER) and census division (CD) boundaries and codes within each province and territory. The map also lists, by province and territory, the ER names in ER code order, within which their component CD codes and names are numerically listed.

(c) Census Metropolitan Areas and Census Agglomerations, 2001 - Shows the general location of census metropolitan areas (CMAs) and census agglomerations (CAs) within each province and territory, with large dots designating CMAs and small dots designating CAs. The map also lists the CMA/CA names in CMA/CA code order, by province and territory.

(d) Statistical Area Classification, 2001 Census Subdivisions - Shows census subdivisions (CSDs) classified by colour according to the category of the Statistical Area Classification (SAC) they are assigned to. The categories include: component of a census metropolitan area/census agglomeration, component of a census metropolitan area and census agglomeration influenced zone (strongly influenced, moderately influenced, weakly influenced or not influenced), or component of the north (Northwest Territories, Nunavut and Yukon Territory).

The scale of the CD, ER, and CD, and CMA and CA maps is 1:10,000,000 (with an inset showing southern Quebec and southern Ontario at 1:5,000,000), and their approximate dimensions are 91 cm by 66 cm (36 inches by 26 inches). The approximate size of the PDF files varies between 1.2 MB and 1.4 MB.

The set of Dissemination Area Reference Maps by Census Tract covers all 27 census metropolitan areas (CMAs) and the 19 census agglomerations (CAs) that are part of the census tract program. Each map in the set covers one census tract (CT) and shows the boundaries and codes of dissemination areas within that CT. The maps also show census tract, census subdivision, and census metropolitan area or census agglomeration boundaries on a background of detailed street networks and other visible features such as rivers, lakes and railroad tracks.There are 6,157 maps in this set - generally one map per census tract. The dimensions of each map are approximately 27 cm by 43 cm (11 inches by 17 inches). Map scales vary according to the size of the census tract; thus the maps cannot be cut and pasted together. In cases where there is too much detail to show on one map, the census tract may be split into two or four maps. Clients are not charged for the extra maps resulting from the CT split. A reference guide is available (Catalogue No. 92F0146GIE).Dissemination area reference maps are also available for smaller urban centres, that is, non-tracted census agglomerations (92F0147XCB, 92F0147XIB, 92F0147XPB), and by census division for areas outside census metropolitan areas and census agglomerations (92F0148XCB, 92F0148XIB, 92F0148XPB). Together, the three sets of dissemination area maps cover all of Canada.

A population needs-based health care resource allocation model was developed and applied using age, sex and health status of populations to measure population need for health care in Ontario. To develop the model, provincial data on self-assessed health and health service utilization by age and sex from 62,413 respondents to the 1990 Ontario Health Survey (OHS) were used in combination with provincial health care expenditure data for the fiscal year 1995/96 by age and sex. The model was limited to the services that were covered in the OHS (general practitioner, specialist physician, optometry, physiotherapy, chiropractic and acute hospital). The distribution of utilization and expenditures between age-sex-health status categories was used to establish appropriate health care resource shares for each age-sex-health status combination. These resource shares were then applied to geographic populations using age, sex and health status data from the OHS together with more recent population estimates to determine the needs-based health care resource allocation for each area. Total dollar allocations were restricted to sum to the 1995/96 provincial budget and were compared with 1995/96 allocations to determine the extent to which Ontario allocations are consistent with the relative needs of the area populations.
