    This annual report provides supporting information to the main Canadian Environmental Sustainability Indicators report, which presents indicators for water quality, air quality and greenhouse gas emissions. This report provides contextual information on the human activities that have influenced the environmental indicators. Socio-economic information is divided into three broad categories: land, population and economy. Selected data from the Censuses of Population and Agriculture are also provided in the form of regional profiles for major drainage areas and sub-drainage areas of Canada. The indicators are intended to assist those in government responsible for developing policy and measuring performance, while also helping individual Canadians who want to know more about the trends in their environment.

    A 24-hour dietary recall from 16,190 respondents aged 12 or older to the Canadian Community Health Survey - Nutrition was used to determine energy and nutrient intake. To identify plausible respondents, a confidence interval was applied to total energy expenditure derived from equations developed by the Institute of Medicine. Estimates of energy and nutrient intake for plausible respondents were compared with estimates for all respondents.

    This reference document provides a basis for the Estimates for the Industrial Consumption of Energy (ICE) on the North American Industrial Classification System (NAICS) basis for the 1990 reference year. The 1990 ICE is a pivotal year for climate change benchmarks with the signing of the Kyoto Protocol. The 1990 and the 1995-2000 period inclusively provide ICE estimates on the new NAICS which permits users to compare and analyze more recent trends and events with common classification structures.
