This publication contains statistical information on child and spousal support payments which are collected from maintenance enforcement programs (MEPs) across Canada. These programs, which exist in each province and territory, provide administrative assistance to recipients to help them collect their support payments. In March 2010, about 408,000 cases were registered in the 11 reporting MEPs.

Information is collected through the Maintenance Enforcement Survey (MES) and the Survey of Maintenance Enforcement Programs (SMEP). These surveys gather information on the caseload of the MEP, the sex and median age of payors and recipients, typical support amounts, compliance rates, information on arrears, frequency and amount of payments, legislation under which the order for support was made, and types of actions that are initiated in order to enforce support.

The SMEP, a micro data survey, is currently being implemented in some jurisdictions and eventually all 13 provincial/territorial MEPs will report to the SMEP. This report contains data from Newfoundland and Labrador, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec, Ontario, Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia, Yukon and the Northwest Territories. In future years, with more provinces and territories able to report to the SMEP, a more complete national picture of maintenance enforcement will emerge.

This information is collected annually under the University and College Academic Staff System and has a reference date of October 1st. Therefore, the data reflect employment in universities as of that date. Each university must authorize Statistics Canada to release their information. Statistics Canada's annual retail trade surveys are undergoing changes. Two activities underlie these changes. The re-design of our annual retail trade questionnaires is one. The other is the conversion from the 1980 Standard Industrial Classification (1980 SIC) to the North American Industrial Classification System (NAICS). These activities will have significant impacts on the output of the annual surveys.

This paper has two goals. The first is to inform retail store data users, industry analysts, trade associations and other stakeholders about these changes. The second is to consult with stakeholders on possible data outputs resulting from the changes.

The paper is organized into five parts. Following the introduction, Part II describes the outputs from the current surveys and compares and contrasts the current outputs with the new. Part III focuses on the introduction of NAICS codes and the changes in coverage for retail trade. In Part IV, the benefits resulting from the above changes are outlined. The final part (Part V) seeks comments or suggestions from data users, retail trade associations and industry specialists on the release of data products as a result of the changes to the surveys.
