    Description:

    This classification system is used for organizing economic data by industry, and is used by Canada, Mexico and the United States. The North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) Canada 2017 version 3.0 supersedes NAICS 2017 Version 2.0. NAICS is revised on a five-year cycle in order to ensure that the classification continues to reflect the changing structure of the economy. NAICS Canada 2017 version 3.0 groups economic activity into 20 sectors and 928 Canadian industries.

    The National Tourism Indicators (NTI) are used to monitor supply, demand, employment and GDP for tourism in Canada on a timely basis. Estimates go back to the first quarter of 1986, and is no longer being released. The indicators are based on benchmarks taken from the Tourism Satellite Accounts. The quarterly statistics are derived using selected components of consumer spending and of GDP by industry and various industry and travel surveys. They are available about 90 days after the reference period. The NTI provide seasonally adjusted, current and constant price estimates, both actual levels and percentage changes. A brief analysis of the quarterly results is included as well as occasional articles. This product was commissioned by the Canadian Tourism Commission to provide quarterly updates for the Tourism Satellite Account.

    Description:

    The Travel Activities and Motivation Survey (TAMS) was conducted by Statistics Canada on behalf of the Canadian Tourism Commission and four provincial and territorial agencies responsible for tourism. The types of information collected are: areas of Canada travelled to in the previous two years and travel intentions for the next two years; reasons non-travellers do not travel; participation in recreational and entertainment activities; reasons for travelling in Canada and to Canadian provinces and territories; types of accommodation used while travelling; sources of travel planning information; and impressions of parts of Canada as travel destinations.

    Data from the TAMS are used by a number of federal government agencies and departments, the Canadian Tourism Commission and provincial tourism boards. Other users include the media, business, consultants, universities and other researchers interested in the Canadian traveller.

    Researchers and consultants in the government, private businesses, universities and the media will use the survey results to educate and inform the public, develop new programs and determine the need for new services and infrastructure.

As Internet-savvy travelers become more comfortable assembling their own travel packages on-line they are increasingly bypassing travel agencies, especially those with no Internet presence.

    The article also suggests that, along with a sharp decline in the number of foreign tourists visiting Canada, the greater prevalence of Internet reservations dampened room prices and operating profits from 2001 to 2003 for traveler accommodations providers, particularly non-affiliated ones.

    Description:

    This paper reports on the potential development of sub-annual indicators for selected service industries using Goods and Services Tax (GST) data. The services sector is now of central importance to advanced economies; however, our knowledge of this sector remains incomplete, partly due to a lack of data. The Voorburg Group on Service Statistics has been meeting for almost twenty years to develop and incorporate better measures for the services sector. Despite this effort, many sub-annual economic measures continue to rely on output data for the goods-producing sector and, with the exception of distributive trades, on employment data for service industries.

    The development of sub-annual indicators for service industries raises two questions regarding the national statistical program. First, is there a need for service output indicators to supplement existing sub-annual measures? And second, what service industries are the most promising for development? The paper begins by reviewing the importance of service industries and how they behave during economic downturns. Next, it examines considerations in determining which service industries to select as GST-based, sub-annual indicators. A case study of the accommodation services industry serves to illustrate improving timeliness and accuracy. We conclude by discussing the opportunities for, and limitations of, these indicators.

    This paper highlights the new Canadian Tourism Satellite Accounts (CTSA) developed by Statistics Canada. The CTSA provides an economic measure of the importance of tourism in terms of expenditures, Gross Domestic Product and employment for Canada. It permits a comparison of tourism with other industries within Canada since the concepts and methods used are based on the framework of the Canadian System of National Accounts. The study revealed that the importance of tourism increased in Canada and that international visitors have become increasingly more important to Canadian tourism since the publication of the first Tourism Satellite Account for the year 1988. This paper presents the results of the CTSA for reference year 2000.
