4. Data profile: Expanding the research potential of the Canadian Health Measures Survey using paired respondent data

The family environment is an important influence on the health and behaviours of children. Few large-scale datasets include detailed and objectively measured health data about multiple individuals from the same family who are living in the same household. The Canadian Health Measures Survey (CHMS) is a repeating, cross-sectional survey that selects two members of a household-a child and a randomly selected older member of the household aged 12 to 79 years-with at least one child aged 3 to 11 years in residence. These paired respondent records, available in the CHMS relationship files, provide unique opportunities to researchers interested in examining associations between two members of the same household for health behaviours and outcomes. This paper highlights the unique features, recommendations for use and research potential of paired data in the CHMS relationship files.

5. Couples’ Perceptions of the Division of Household and Child Care Tasks: Are there Differences Between Sociodemographic Groups?

The division of household labour has been the primary focus of researchers examining gender equality among couples. Most research indicates that women continue to assume the majority of housework and child care. However, there is an indication that women’s and men’s hours spent performing household labour have converged over time. Using the 2011, 2016 and 2017 waves of the General Social Survey, this study examines opposite-sex couples’ perceptions of the division of unpaid work in their household and how these perceptions vary across different sociodemographic groups.

6. Homeownership, mortgage debt and types of mortgage among Canadian families

A dream of many Canadians is to someday own their own home and most take on debt for that reason. This study uses data from the Survey of Financial Security to examine changes in homeownership rates and factors associated with homeownership, the proportion of families who had paid off the mortgage on their principal residence, and the amount of mortgage debt owed by families who had a mortgage. The study also provides information on the types of mortgage rates on the principal residence (fixed rate, variable rate or a combination of both).

Three financial distress indicators are examined: the proportion of Canadian families who skipped or delayed a mortgage payment, the proportion who skipped or delayed a non-mortgage payment and the proportion who borrowed money through a payday loan. This paper also examines the factors associated with financial distress among Canadians, with a particular focus on their debt level.

The majority of women and girls in Canada live in families although there is much diversity in their particular living arrangements. This chapter of Women in Canada begins with a brief overview of the family context and living arrangements of girls aged 14 and under but focuses primarily on those of women aged 15 and over. Topics to be examined include the conjugal status of women, that is, the extent to which women are in legal marriages or common-law unions, and whether these women in couples are opposite-sex or same-sex or include children in the home. In addition, trends related to women in stepfamilies, divorced or separated women and lone-mother families will be analysed. Other living arrangements of women, such as living alone, with relatives, or only with non-relatives, as well as fertility patterns, will also be explored.
