- Stats in brief: 45-20-00032026004Description: Orange skies, record breaking fire seasons, and smoke that travels thousands of kilometres have made wildfires impossible to ignore. But beyond the visible destruction lies another story, one measured not only in burned forests and evacuations, but also in economic impacts that ripple across communities and industries. How do wildfires affect Canada's economy? How are these impacts measured? And what do they tell us about the challenges Canadians may face in the years ahead? In this episode, we spoke with Mike Flannigan, a leading expert on wildfire science and climate change at Thompson Rivers University, and Mark Brown, Principal Researcher at Statistics Canada, to explore how wildfires are reshaping Canada’s forests, communities, and economy.Release date: 2026-07-06

- Surveys and statistical programs – Documentation: 5081Description: The survey collects, analyses and publishes information on industrial greenhouse gas emissions to support Canada's national and international reporting obligations and the public interest as it relates to climate change and the environment.
- Surveys and statistical programs – Documentation: 5114Description: Natural resource asset accounts are one of the main elements of the United Nations System of Environmental-Economic Accounting which was adopted as an international statistical standard in 2012. Natural resource asset accounts measure quantities of natural resource assets (oil, natural gas, minerals, and timber) and the annual changes in these assets due to natural processes and human activity. These accounts, which are recorded using both physical and monetary units, form the basis of the estimates of Canada's natural resource wealth that are integrated into the Canadian national balance sheet accounts.
- Surveys and statistical programs – Documentation: 5115Description: Physical flow accounts are one of the main elements of the United Nations System of Environmental-Economic Accounting (SEEA) which was adopted as an international statistical standard in 2012. These accounts record, in physical units of measure, the supply and use of natural inputs (e.g. cubic metres of water), products (e.g. terajoules of gasoline), and residuals (e.g. kilotonnes of carbon dioxide emissions).
- Surveys and statistical programs – Documentation: 5120Description: This survey is being conducted to provide Canadians with national and regional indicators related to the use of water in industry.
- Surveys and statistical programs – Documentation: 5127Description: The air quality indicators reflect the potential for long term exposure of Canadians to ground-level ozone and fine particulate matter (PM2.5), key components of smog and two of the most common and harmful air pollutants to which people are exposed. Both the ozone and PM2.5 indicators are population weighted estimates of average concentrations of these pollutants observed by monitoring stations across Canada. Statistics Canada calculates the indicators based on monitoring data provided by Environment Canada's National Air Pollution Surveillance (NAPS) network.
- Surveys and statistical programs – Documentation: 5128Description: The purpose of this survey is to obtain information on the quality of surface water in Canada on an annual basis. Data are obtained from water quality monitoring programs managed by Environment Canada, provincial departments, or under federal-provincial agreements. At present, the freshwater quality indicator is presented as a national histogram of three consecutive years worth of results of the water quality index, calculated at individual monitoring sites across the country. The histogram groups values into five categories: poor, marginal, fair, good and excellent.
- Surveys and statistical programs – Documentation: 5129Description: The greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions indicator reports the trend in human made greenhouse gas emissions at a national, provincial/territorial, and sectoral level for six greenhouse gases in Canada: carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, sulphur hexafluoride, perfluorocarbons, and hydrofluorocarbons.
