This analysis provides an estimate of the numbers of small companies that have, and have not, grown to medium size. It determines which industries and communities have the highest proportions of quickly growing small firms, where the firms that have not yet grown to medium size are, and how they could be supported in their growth strategy.

Theories of business growth lead us to believe that, to grow, a company needs to be innovative, conduct research and development, have access to multiple sources of funding, protect its intellectual property, engage in alliances and establish itself in a market niche. In this article, interviews with Canadian technology-based companies show that some companies manage to grow by breaking these rules.

Release date: 2004-10-28 - 58. Postsecondary Field of Study and the Canadian Labour Market Outcomes of Immigrants and Non-immigrants ArchivedArticles and reports: 11F0019M2004233Geography: CanadaDescription:
In Canada's federal system for economic (skilled) class immigrant selection, education is treated as if it is homogeneous and only differs in quantity. Some provinces, however, differentiate based on postsecondary field of study. This study explores the economic implications of field of study for each sex, and for two subgroups of immigrants, those educated in Canada and those educated elsewhere .
Field of study is not observed to explain much of the earnings difference between immigrants and the Canadian born, though it is relatively more important for males than females in doing so. Interestingly, while there are a few exceptions, a general pattern is observed whereby the differences between high- and low-earning fields are not as large for immigrants as for the Canadian born. Similarly, social assistance receipt has smaller variance across fields for immigrants than for the Canadian born. Nevertheless, substantial inter-field differences are observed for each immigrant group.
Release date: 2004-10-28 - 59. Adult correctional services in Canada, 2002-2003 ArchivedArticles and reports: 85-002-X20040108409Geography: CanadaDescription:
The federal government and the provincial and territorial governments share the administration of correctional services in Canada, which include custody (sentenced custody, remand and other temporary detention) and community-based sentences (probation, conditional sentences) as well as statutory release and parole supervision. Correctional services agencies at both levels work toward the same goal, that is, the protection of society as well as the rehabilitation of offenders and their safe reintegration into communities as productive members.
This Juristat reports on data from the Adult Correctional Services Survey for the 2002/03 fiscal year, and shows trends as far back as 1993/94. It examines average counts of adults who have been incarcerated, who were under community supervision on probation, serving a conditional sentence or on conditional release (parole and statutory release). The number of admissions to these programs, the offences leading to the admission, the duration of the incarceration or probation, as well as some offender characteristics, such as age, sex and Aboriginal identity are also described. Furthermore, the cost of correctional services in 2002/03, broken down by type of activity and level of government is examined. The average daily inmate costs and daily offender costs of those in community supervision from 1993/94 to 2002/03, as well as the number of correctional institutions in Canada in 2002/03 are reported.
Release date: 2004-10-27 - Articles and reports: 75-001-X200411013128Geography: CanadaDescription:
Who were the low-wage earners in 2000, what proportion lived in low-income families, and how did the situation change between 1980 and 2000? Low wages need not mean economic hardship: for example young people living with their parents or spouses who are secondary earners may not be at risk. However, groups such as recent immigrants, lone mothers, and unattached individuals may well be at risk.

The age of onset, duration of symptoms and relationship with other mental disorders are discussed. To assess the burden of social anxiety disorder, associations with social support, functional disability and quality of life are examined. The number of people who sought treatment to help them deal with their social fears is also explored.

Release date: 2004-12-23 - Articles and reports: 67F0001M2004022Geography: CanadaDescription:
Canada's balance of payments with the United States should be, in principle, the mirror image of the U.S. balance of payments with Canada. In practice, however, the two countries' statistics have conceptual, methodological and data differences.
Each year, the two countries' balance of payments current accounts are reconciled to reflect how the estimates would appear if both countries used common definitions, methodologies and data sources. Such reconciliation is important because of the extensive economic links between the two countries and the need to explain differences in their published official bilateral estimates.
