  • Table: 81-590-X2000001
    Geography: Canada
    Description:

The Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) is a collaborative effort among member countries of the OECD, designed to assess, on a regular basis, the achievement of 15-year-olds in reading, mathematical and scientific literacy through a common international test.

This report presents initial results for Canada, Canadian provinces and selected countries from PISA 2000. Reading literacy is the major focus of PISA 2000, with mathematical and scientific literacy as minor domains.

This report also includes results from the Youth in Transition Survey (YITS), a Canadian longitudinal survey designed to examine the patterns of, and influences on, major transitions in young people's lives, particularly with respect to education, training and work.

Thirty-two countries participated in PISA 2000. In Canada, approximately 30,000 15-year-old students from more than 1,000 schools participated.

    Description:

This series of reports is from the Nonprofit Sector Knowledge Base Project. Begun in 1997, the Nonprofit Sector Knowledge Base Project is a multi-year initiative to build a corpus of reliable data and knowledge pertaining to the voluntary sector, its organizations, and the contributory behaviour of Canadians. Its component activities include an inventory of existing data resources, studies to identify the distinctive characteristics and the social dynamics of volunteering and giving of volunteers and charitable donors, participating in generating new data via surveys and case studies, assessing the state of existing information on the voluntary sector in Canada, and strengthening conceptual frameworks that will advance our understanding of the voluntary domain. An essential implicit objective has been to encourage a shift from an orientation to short-term, piecemeal data creation on volunteering toward a longer-term perspective on systematic information development. As of December 2001, 25 research reports had been prepared and others are in preparation. (A list of reports from the project is available on request.)

    Description:

One objective of public policy is to reduce income disparity in Canada. Previous research (e.g. Rupnik, Thompson-James and Bollman (2001)) has indicated that, on average, rural residents have a similar incidence of low income as urban residents. However, there is considerable diversity within rural regions, i.e. the term 'rural' is far from being a homogeneous entity. For example, the rural regions in Ontario are very different from the rural regions in the Prairies due to the differences in population size and access to markets, among other features. Since rural regions across Canada differ economically and socially, it follows that the nature of rural income disparities could also differ across provinces in Canada. The objective of this study is to describe the range in income disparities across rural Canada.

    Description:

Like most statistical agencies, Statistics Canada publishes three Gross Domestic Product (GDP) series. These are the output-based GDP, the income-based GDP and the expenditure-based GDP. This document is aimed at describing the concepts, definitions, classifications and statistical methods underlying the output-based GDP series, also known as GDP by industry or simply monthly GDP.

The report is organized into seven chapters. Chapter 1 defines what GDP by industry is, describes its various uses and how it connects with the other components of the Canadian System of National Accounts. Chapter 2 deals with the calculation of the GDP by industry estimates. Chapter 3 examines industry and commodity classification schemes. Chapter 4 discusses the subject of deflation. The choice of deflators, the role of the base year and the method of rebasing are all addressed in this chapter. Chapter 5 looks at such technical issues as benchmarking, trading day and seasonal adjustment. Chapter 6 is devoted to the presentation of the GDP by industry, detailing the format, release dates and modes of dissemination, as well as the need and the frequency of revising the estimates. Finally, Chapter 7 reviews the historical development of monthly GDP from 1926 to the present.
