Description:

Custom tabulations from the National Household Survey are available for 2011. They are produced to meet the needs of individual users, according to their exact requirements in terms of content, geography, format and output medium. This includes the derivation of new variables and the creation of custom geographies. The flexibility of this tabulation type allows for the handling of many demanding and complex requests. Experienced custom services consultants are available to advise clients on the tabulation that will best suit their needs.

Description:

Semi-custom tabulations from the National Household Survey are available for 2011. Semi-custom tabulations allow users to replicate the data content of standard data tables for custom geographies or a fixed profile for custom geographies or custom target groups. The fixed profile, which cannot be modified, contains a wide range of characteristics from the National Household Survey in a compact and easy to use format. Semi-custom tabulations contain three types of tables, semi-custom profiles, target group profiles and semi-custom cross-tabulations.

1. Semi-custom Profiles

Semi-custom profiles replicate a fixed profile for custom geographies. This format allows for easy comparison of characteristics between geographies. The semi-custom profile content pertains to individuals, families, households, and dwellings. Additional costs apply for creation of custom geographies.

2. Target Group Profiles

Target group profiles replicate a fixed profile for a custom target group (such as a specific linguistic group). This format allows for easier analysis of the characteristics of a target group on its own. In addition to the target group, the desired geography can also be customized. The content pertains to the universe of individuals only (no family, household, or dwelling data are available). Additional costs apply for creation of the target group and for creation of any custom geographies.

3. Semi-custom Cross-tabulations

Semi-custom cross-tabulations enable users to replicate the content of published Data Tables for the geographic area(s) and output medium of their choice.

Some Data Tables provide a simple overview of the country, others consist of three or four cross-tabulated variables, and still others are of special or analytic interest.

Description:

The semi-custom profile subscription service enables users to receive semi-custom profile components as data are released. This service is available via the Statistics Canada's regional offices in a number of available media.

Description:

In 2009, the Nunavut Housing Corporation (NHC) commissioned the Nunavut Bureau of Statistics (NBS) and Statistics Canada (STC) to undertake a Nunavut-wide Housing Needs Survey. A partnership was established between Statistics Canada and the Nunavut Bureau of Statistics whereby the NBS would collect the data under the Nunavut Statistics Act and manage data collection activities, including the hiring and training of survey interviewers and collection monitoring, from a northern base. Statistics Canada's role was to provide technical assistance to the NBS throughout the survey development and collection process and to process and analyze the survey results.

The objectives of the Nunavut Housing Needs Survey are to: collect accurate data on the housing needs of Nunavummiut, quantify and identify the factors related to the housing shortage in Nunavut, provide communities with information on housing conditions within their communities, and assist the Government of Nunavut in planning and providing for the housing needs of Nunavummiut.

The survey was conducted in person, using a paper questionnaire. One adult person in each dwelling responded to the survey on behalf of all household members.

Description: Highest certificate, degree or diploma in percentage, by groups designated as visible minorities and selected sociodemographic characteristics (sex, age group, first official language spoken, immigrant status, period of immigration and generation status), for the population 15 years and over in private households.

Description: Average employment income and average weekly earnings, by groups designated as a visible minorities and selected sociodemographic characteristics (sex, age group, first official language spoken, immigrant status, period of immigration, generation status and highest certificate, degree or diploma) for the population who worked during the reference year and aged 15 years and over in private households, 2006,2011 and 2016.

Description: Participation rate, employment rate, unemployment rate and percentage of individuals in full-time employment, by groups designated as visible minority selected sociodemographic characteristics (sex, age group, immigrant status, period of immigration, generation status and highest certificate, degree or diploma) for the population aged 15 years and over in private households.

Description: All management occupations, senior management occupations, middle management occupations and self-employed in percent, by groups designated as visible minorities and selected sociodemographic characteristics (sex, age group, first official language spoken, immigrant status, period of immigration, generation status and highest certificate, degree or diploma) for the employed labour force population aged 15 years and over in private households.

Description: Overqualification rate, by groups designated as visible minorities and selected sociodemographic characteristics (sex, age group, first official language spoken, immigrant status, period of immigration and generation status, highest university certificate degree or diploma at bachelor level or above and location of study) for the employed labour force aged 15 years and over in private households.

Description: Percentage of youth not in employment, education or training, by groups designated as visible minorities and selected sociodemographic characteristics (sex, age group, first official language spoken and generation status), for the population aged 15 to 29 years in private households.

This topic presents data on the income of individuals, families, and households of Canada for the year 2010, including the composition of income, earnings and low-income prevalence data. The data also include the family and household incomes of Canadians by characteristics, family structure, household type and geography, as well as the total income and earnings levels of certain population groups (e.g., immigrants). The composition of income includes market income and income from government sources, and presents detailed components.

This topic also presents data on dwelling characteristics, including number of rooms and bedrooms, condition of dwelling, period of construction, condominium status, value of dwelling, and structural type of dwelling. Data on households are also presented, including household maintainer, housing tenure, housing subsidy, housing suitability and shelter costs.

Two analytical documents provide analysis on the key findings in the data, and are complemented with the short articles found in NHS in Brief and the data in the NHS Focus on Geography Series.

Data products

The NHS Profile is one data product that provides a statistical overview of user selected geographic areas based on several detailed variables and/or groups of variables. Other data products include data tables which represent a series of cross tabulations ranging in complexity and are available for various levels of geography.

Even though most grandparents live in separate households from their adult children and grandchildren, sometimes the grandparent and grandchild generations live together. This paper provides information on the number of grandparents who are in this particular situation, along with their living arrangements and their ethnocultural and sociodemographic characteristics.

Many of the 60 or so Aboriginal languages in Canada are considered endangered to varying degrees for their long-term survival. Assessing language vitality or endangerment through the measurement of various factors can provide useful information to help ensure the continuity of a language. This paper illustrates how the 2011 Census of Population and the 2011 National Household Survey (NHS) can be used to measure some of the factors that provide information related to the vitality of Aboriginal languages.

This article provides information on using family-related variables from the microdata files of Canada’s Census of Population. These files exist internally at Statistics Canada, in the Research Data Centres (RDCs), and as public-use microdata files (PUMFs). This article explains certain technical aspects of all three versions, including the creation of multi-level variables for analytical purposes.

Statistics Canada has produced a hierarchical PUMF that relies on perturbation instead of suppression to protect data confidentiality. This paper describes the creation of this new type of PUMF for the Agency. The creation of this PUMF using data perturbation techniques, a first for Statistics Canada, was in many ways a research development project. In the process, ways were devised to avoid overlap with other PUMFs, to adapt and apply risk measures for a multitude of personal and household characteristics, and to carry out perturbations for related characteristics.
