Description: The focus of this portrait is the analysis of the sociodemographic, linguistic, ethnocultural, and religious diversity of the Black populations in Canada. Using Census of Population data (1996 to 2021) and data from the 2011 National Household Survey, the paper explores the evolution of the Black populations in Canada and their composition in 2021. An intersectional perspective is used to explore the interactions between multiple diversity measures. By examining the main characteristics of the Black populations born in Canada, the Caribbean and Africa, this analytical portrait demonstrates that there is not one, but many diverse Black populations in Canada.

Description: The current study uses the 2011 National Household Survey and the 2016 and 2021 Censuses to provide data on the number of Indigenous foster children in private households, foster child rates, and disparity between Indigenous and non-Indigenous foster care rates between 2011 and 2021. Subsequently, select sociodemographic characteristics of Indigenous children in foster care and household characteristics are explored using the 2021 Census.

Description: The Individuals File, 2011 National Household Survey (Public Use Microdata Files) provides data on the characteristics of the Canadian population. The file contains a 2.7% sample of anonymous responses to the 2011 National Household Survey (NHS) questionnaire. The files have been carefully scrutinized to ensure the complete confidentiality of the individual responses and geographic identifiers have been restricted to provinces/territories and metropolitan areas. With 133 variables, this comprehensive tool is excellent for policy analysts, pollsters, social researchers and anyone interested in modelling and performing statistical regression analysis using National Household Survey data.

Microdata files uniquely provide users access to non-aggregated data. The PUMFs user can group and manipulate these variables to suit data and research requirements. Tabulations excluded from other NHS products can be created or relationships between variables can be analyzed using different statistical tests. PUMFs provide quick access to a comprehensive social and economic database about Canada and its people.

This product, offered on DVD-ROM, contains the data file (in ASCII format); user documentation and supporting information; all licence agreements; and SAS, SPSS and Stata program source codes to enable users to read the set of records. It is important to note that users will require knowledge of data manipulation packages (or software) such as SAS, SPSS or Stata to use this product.

Description: This hierarchical PUMF product provides access to non-aggregated data covering a sample of 1% of the Canadian households. It is a comprehensive social, demographic and economic database about Canada and its people, and contains a wealth of characteristics on the population. The file enables the study of individuals in relation to their census families, economic families and households. The geographic identifiers have been restricted to the provinces, the three territories grouped into a region called Northern Canada and selected metropolitan areas (Toronto, Montréal, Vancouver, Edmonton and Calgary) to ensure respondents’ anonymity. This comprehensive tool is excellent for policy analysts, pollsters, social researchers and anyone interested in modeling and performing statistical regression analysis using 2011 National Household Survey data.

The Individuals File was released on July 29, 2014 and the Hierarchical File is available as of today, December 9, 2014.

This product, available in DVD-ROM format, contains a data file in American Standard Code for Information Interchange (ASCII) format as well as user documentation. It contains SAS, SPSS and Stata program source codes to enable users to read the set of records. This article explores the relationship between various social determinants of health and selected health outcomes for First Nations people aged 15 and older living off-reserve. Specifically, the following social determinants are explored: health behaviours (smoking, alcohol consumption, obesity), physical environments (housing, mobility, employment, education, income, food security), access to health resources, cultural continuity (participation in traditional activities, Aboriginal language, social support), and residential school attendance. An integrated life course and social determinants model of Aboriginal health framework is used to guide the analysis.

In this chapter of Women in Canada, the demographic and socio-economic characteristics of visible minority women and girls are explored. Topics include the growth of the visible minority population in Canada and its relationship to immigration, living arrangements, education, labour force participation and employment, social participation, and health. Where it is relevant and feasible, analyses compare both the total visible minority population and specific visible minority groups with the population not belonging to a visible minority group.

Note: the term “visible minority” refers to one of four designated groups under the Employment Equity Act. Within this context, visible minorities are defined as “persons, other than Aboriginal peoples, who are non-Caucasian in race or non-white in colour.”

This article provides information on using family-related variables from the microdata files of Canada’s Census of Population. These files exist internally at Statistics Canada, in the Research Data Centres (RDCs), and as public-use microdata files (PUMFs). This article explains certain technical aspects of all three versions, including the creation of multi-level variables for analytical purposes.

Statistics Canada has produced a hierarchical PUMF that relies on perturbation instead of suppression to protect data confidentiality. This paper describes the creation of this new type of PUMF for the Agency. The creation of this PUMF using data perturbation techniques, a first for Statistics Canada, was in many ways a research development project. In the process, ways were devised to avoid overlap with other PUMFs, to adapt and apply risk measures for a multitude of personal and household characteristics, and to carry out perturbations for related characteristics.
