New motor vehicle sales, April 2026

There were 183,921 new motor vehicles sold in Canada in April, decreasing 6.0% from April 2025. In dollar terms, sales decreased 1.7% in April 2026 compared with one year earlier. Over the same period, the number of new trucks sold decreased (-6.4%), while the number of new passenger cars sold experienced a smaller decline (-2.7%).
In April 2026, 17,795 new zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) were sold, an increase of 21.2% from one year earlier. New ZEVs comprised 9.7% of total new motor vehicles sold, compared with 7.5% in April 2025.
Note to readers
The term "zero-emission vehicle" (ZEV) refers to any motor vehicle that has the potential to produce no tailpipe emissions. The ZEV category includes battery electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles.
