Canadian international trade in services, September 2025
Released: 2025-12-11
Canada's monthly international trade in services surplus was essentially unchanged from the previous month at $0.2 billion in September. Overall, imports of services were up 0.8% to $19.8 billion, and exports of services increased 0.7% to $20.0 billion.
Imports of commercial services rose 2.4% to $11.6 billion in September, driven by an increase in financial services. The overall increase in imports was partially offset by decreases in imports of travel services (-1.9% to $4.9 billion) and of transportation services (-0.8% to $3.3 billion).
Exports of commercial services were the main contributor to the increase in services exports, climbing 0.9% to reach $12.2 billion in September. Exports of travel services increased 0.7% to $5.8 billion, mostly due to an increase in spending in Canada by travellers from the United States. From August to September, exports of transportation services were essentially unchanged at $1.9 billion.

Total exports of goods increased 6.3% to $64.2 billion in September, and total imports of goods decreased 4.1% to $64.1 billion. This resulted in the trade in goods balance going from a deficit of $6.4 billion in August to a surplus of $0.2 billion in September. Combined, the trade balance for goods and services amounted to a surplus of $0.3 billion in September.
Note to readers
New tentative publication dates for Canadian international trade in services statistics
As a result of the recent US government shutdown, Statistics Canada has announced tentative new release dates for Canadian International Merchandise Trade statistics, with several months being affected. These dates apply equally for the publication of monthly data on Canada's international trade in services and remain subject to change.
Statistics for the October 2025 reference month are now scheduled to be published on January 8, 2026, for the November 2025 reference month, on January 29, 2026, for the December 2025 reference month, on February 19, 2026, and for the January 2026 reference month, on March 12, 2026. Statistics Canada will communicate any updates to release dates should changes be necessary. Following these releases, it is expected that the publication of monthly international trade statistics will return to the originally planned release schedule.
Revisions
This release incorporates statistical revisions back to January 2022 as part of the annual revision exercise of the Canadian System of Macroeconomic Accounts. These revisions were first published with the balance of international payments release for the third quarter of 2025.
Typically, the revisions are incorporated with the October reference month release; however, due to changes to the release schedule resulting from the US government shutdown, these revisions are being incorporated with the September reference month's release, the first one following the publication of the quarterly balance of payments.
The revisions mainly reflect the integration of new benchmark survey data and updates resulting from the integration of trade data in the broader analytical context of the supply-use tables. For more information, consult the release, "Annual international trade in services, 2024."
Next release
