Study: An industry-based analysis of the Canada Emergency Business Account Program, 2020 to 2024
Released: 2025-02-18
A new study, entitled "Borrowing, repayments and bankruptcies by industry: Results from the Canada Emergency Business Account program," is released today. It explores the amount of Canada Emergency Business Account (CEBA) funding that was allocated to different industries, the extent to which CEBA loans were repaid and how this financial support aligned with bankruptcy patterns in the period leading up to and immediately following the January 18, 2024, deadline to qualify for partial loan forgiveness. The results provide some insight into how the use of emergency funding programs may have influenced short- and medium-term business survival rates.
The study leverages loan information from the CEBA program administered by Export Development Canada, bankruptcy data from the Office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcy and business characteristics from Statistics Canada's business register.
