Hours worked and labour productivity in the provinces and territories, 2010 to 2023 (updated data)

Updated data on provincial and territorial labour productivity and related measures from 2010 to 2023 are now available.
These data revisions reflect the incorporation of new benchmark values from the provincial and territorial supply and use tables for 2021, as well as various updated source data. More specifically, these revisions are consistent with those incorporated in the provincial and territorial economic accounts and the provincial and territorial gross domestic product (GDP) by industry (released November 7, 2024), as well as in the national GDP by industry (released on November 29, 2024).
This release also takes into account the historical revisions to the Survey of Employment, Payrolls and Hours (released March 28, 2024), but does not incorporate the recent revisions to the Labour Force Survey (LFS) (released on January 24, 2025). The incorporation of these historical revisions of the LFS is scheduled on February 9, 2026, with the next release of revised data.
In addition, this release includes the improvement in the estimate of temporary workers from 2010.
Finally, starting with this release, estimates for the owner-occupied dwellings industry are not included in the estimates for the non-business sector, but are published separately in data table 36-10-0480-01. More precisely, this industry is no longer included in the other non-profit institutions serving households industry, part of the non-business sector. This makes it easier to interpret data from the non-business sector than those from the business sector.

Note to readers
Provincial and territorial measures of labour productivity and related variables are consistent with the concepts of the Canadian System of Macroeconomic Accounts and with the input-output industry codes.
It is important to note that real output (used to measure productivity) is based on the value added measured at basic prices, not at market prices, which is consistent with the detailed framework by industry. Further, the real estate, and rental and leasing industry, which is part of the service-producing business sector, excludes the imputed rent for owner-occupied dwellings because there are no data on the number of hours that homeowners spend on dwelling maintenance services.
The improvement in the estimate of temporary workers is an adjustment introduced to better assess the portion of non-residents of Canada not captured by available data sources.
