Release of the Canadian Public Transit Network Database

Released: 2025-01-31

The Canadian Public Transit Network Database is a national dataset of transit infrastructure, compiling data from Canadian public transit agencies.

The Canadian Public Transit Network Database, courtesy of the Urban Data Lab at Statistics Canada, is now available as part of the Linkable Open Data Environment.

The data are presented in General Transit Feed Specification (GTFS), an open standard format used for static public transit information including stops, routes, scheduled trips, and other variables. The Canadian Public Transit Network Database supports data on multiple transport types, including bus, train, metro, and ferries. The coverage of the dataset extends across every province, two territories, and includes municipal as well as inter-regional routes, where available.

In addition to GTFS formatted files, the Canadian Public Transit Network Database includes a consolidated geospatial dataset representing transit stops and routes across Canada. The database allows for comparisons of public transit network between municipalities and facilitates evidence-based decision making on public transportation infrastructure within Canada.
