National culture indicators, second quarter 2024
Released: 2024-09-27
Real gross domestic product (GDP) for the culture and sport sectors in Canada was up 0.6% in the second quarter, slightly above the real GDP growth rate of the total economy (+0.5%). On a nominal basis, GDP for the culture and sport sectors rose 1.6% in the second quarter as prices increased in all culture and sport domains during the quarter.
Jobs attributable to culture and sport edged up 0.3% in the second quarter, bringing total jobs for those sectors to 745,516.
Gross domestic product up in all culture and sport domains
Nominal GDP for the culture sector rose 1.5% to $15.7 billion in the second quarter, following a 1.3% increase in the first quarter. All culture domains saw growth in the second quarter, ranging from a high of 3.1% for the heritage and libraries domain to lows of 1.2% for the audio-visual and interactive media domain and 1.0% for the sound recording domain.
Overall growth of 1.3% in the written and published works domain masked diverging trends within its subdomains in the second quarter. The multi subdomain—covering support services for various written and published works—recorded strong growth, up 3.7% in the second quarter. In contrast, the books (-3.2%), periodicals (-2.5%) and other published works (-3.6%) subdomains all saw notable declines.
Nominal GDP in the sport sector grew 2.1% in the second quarter, up from 1.3% in the first quarter. Organized sport rebounded in the second quarter, up 2.6% following a 0.5% decrease in the prior quarter.
Film and video sees continued job recovery, while losses seen in live performance and interactive media
The culture sector added 1,575 jobs in the second quarter, an increase of 0.2% from the previous quarter. This represents the second consecutive quarter of modest job growth following five consecutive quarters of declines.
Among the culture domains, changes to the level of jobs were limited in the second quarter, from 422 jobs lost (-0.5%) in the written and published works domain to 1,399 jobs gained (+1.0%) in the audio-visual and interactive media domain.
Like the first quarter of 2024, job gains in the second quarter were due to the film and video subdomain, which added 2,716 jobs (+4.5%) as the industry continued to bounce back from the Hollywood strikes in 2023. Despite this strong growth, the audio-visual and interactive media domain was held back by the broadcasting subdomain, which shed 904 jobs as broadcasters continued to announce layoffs in Canada, and by the interactive media subdomain, which lost 414 jobs in the second quarter as part of a global trend of layoffs in the industry.
Sport jobs grew in the second quarter, gaining 594 jobs (+0.6%) to reach 103,423 total jobs. Sports education and training gained 296 jobs (+0.7%), while organized sport added 227 jobs (+0.6%).

Revisions
With the release of the second quarter of 2024, data for the first quarter of 2024 have been revised.
Volume and price estimates for real gross domestic product (GDP) were updated to a 2017 (2017=100) reference year as part of the first quarter 2024 release.
Data
Data are available for GDP in nominal, basic prices and constant prices (2017 prices).
Data on real GDP (corrected for price changes) are provided as a means to examine economic growth within culture and sport, as well as to make comparisons with other sectors.
Unless otherwise stated, GDP in this release refers to nominal GDP, at basic prices.
Growth rates in this release are represented as the percentage change in the series from one quarter to the next unless otherwise stated.
Data have been seasonally adjusted. All data are based on the product perspective.
Information about which products are incorporated into each subdomain is available in the Canadian Culture Satellite Account methodology.
Audio-visual and interactive media and visual and applied art
Refinements to the video game publishing and design and development industries, and to the computer systems design and related services industry were introduced starting in the first quarter of 2016 to improve estimates around video game development and website design. They affect the design and interactive media subdomains of the visual and applied arts domain and the audio-visual and interactive media domain, respectively.
There is a noticeable break in the data series in the interactive media and design subdomains between the fourth quarter of 2015 and the first quarter of 2016. This break does not represent a real change in economic conditions. Estimates prior to the first quarter of 2016 are on the old basis and should be used with caution.
