Stocks of principal field crops, July 31, 2024

Released: 2024-09-09

Total stocks of canola and barley were up as of July 31, compared with the same date a year earlier. Stocks of wheat, oats, dry peas and lentils were down.

Closing wheat stocks decrease

Total stocks of wheat fell 18.5% year over year to 4.6 million tonnes as of July 31. The decline was partially due to lower total national supply (-1.0% year over year to 38.7 million tonnes).

Commercial stocks rose 39.7% to 3.8 million tonnes while on-farm stocks fell (-72.7% to 796 000 tonnes).

Wheat excluding durum fell 20.7% to 4.0 million tonnes year over year, while durum wheat stocks edged up 0.3% to 576 000 tonnes.

Deliveries of wheat off farm rose 1.4% year over year to 31.9 million tonnes as of July 31.

Exports of wheat fell 1.2% to 25.2 million tonnes but remained above the five-year average for the period.

Canola crush hits record high

Total stocks of canola increased 66.9% year over year to 3.1 million tonnes as of July 31 on higher commercial stocks (+129.0% to 2.3 million tonnes). On-farm stocks fell 7.7% to 775 000 tonnes.

Total domestic disappearance of canola (mostly for crushing) increased 8.1% to a record 11.5 million tonnes, likely in response to increased demand for renewable energy.

Higher domestic disappearance was more than offset by lower exports of canola (-15.9% to 6.7 million tonnes), resulting in higher ending stocks.

Canola exports were down likely due to lower global demand caused by competition from soybean and palm oils, combined with higher domestic demand for industrial uses.

Lower stocks of dry peas and lentils

Total stocks of dry peas fell 36.7% year over year to 348 000 tonnes as of July 31. On-farm stocks fell 70.7% to 103 000 tonnes, while commercial stocks increased 23.7% to 245 000 tonnes.

Exports of dry peas fell 4.3% to 2.5 million tonnes.

Stocks of lentils totalled 179 000 tonnes as of July 31, down 15.2% from the same date in 2023, as on-farm stocks fell 68.8% to 29 000 tonnes, while commercial stocks rose 26.1% to 150 000 tonnes.

Exports decreased 25.4% year over year to 1.6 million tonnes.

Barley stocks increase

Barley stocks were up 72.6% year over year to 1.2 million tonnes as of July 31, on higher on-farm (+57.6% to 878 000 tonnes) and commercial (+126.3% to 344 000 tonnes) stocks.

Deliveries of barley off farm decreased 14.1% to 4.3 million tonnes, while exports were down 14.9% year over year to 3.3 million tonnes.

Barley used largely for feed purposes fell 12.9% to 4.8 million tonnes as of July 31.

Stocks of oats are down

Total stocks of oats were down 63.7% year over year to 463 000 tonnes as of July 31 because of lower harvest in 2023. Both commercial stocks (-47.1% to 257 000 tonnes) and on-farm stocks (-73.9% to 206 000 tonnes) contributed to the decrease.

Oat exports fell (-12.1% to 2.3 million tonnes), as did oats used for animal feed (-36.1% to 934 700 tonnes), likely because of lower total supply.

  Note to readers

Data on stocks of principal field crops held on farms on July 31, 2024, come from the June Field Crop Survey, which surveyed approximately 25,000 Canadian farmers from May 15 to June 12, 2024. Final estimates of on-farm stocks are produced as part of a supply and disposition exercise, which includes data related to commercial stocks as of July 31.

Data on commercial stocks of western major crops originate from the Canadian Grain Commission. Data on commercial stocks of special crops originate from a survey of handlers and agents of special crops.

National supply-disposition tables for the major grains and special crops are published jointly with the current release on stock levels and are available in online data tables 32-10-0013-01 and 32-10-0015-01.

Stock data are subject to revision during the two years following their initial publication.

An easy-to-print chart, Crop Reporting Survey at a Glance, which provides an overview of our survey cycle, is now available.
