Canadian Housing Statistics Program

Released: 2024-08-21

Today, the Canadian Housing Statistics Program is releasing new data on residential property owners for the 2022 reference year.

These data provide detailed information on the characteristics of homeowners—such as age, sex, family type, immigrant status and income—in Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Ontario, Manitoba, British Columbia, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut.

The data released today also include statistics on residential property buyers who purchased a property in 2021 in some provinces, including their demographic characteristics and first-time home buyer status.

  Note to readers

Data for the 2022 reference year reflect the stock of properties available on the property assessment roll for each province and territory for that year. Homeowners for the 2022 reference year are thus defined as owners of properties assessed for 2022 property taxes. The stock date varies between provinces and territories.

A property may have more than one owner, and an owner may have more than one property; thus, the counts of owners and properties can differ.

Estimates of the number of buyers as part of a property sale and the price-to-income ratio for the 2018 to 2020 reference years have been revised in Table 46-10-0062-01.

Data for Newfoundland and Labrador and the Northwest Territories are not available at the provincial or territorial levels.

Data on owners in Prince Edward Island, Alberta and Yukon will be released at a later point.

Geographical boundaries

The Canadian Housing Statistics Program (CHSP) disseminates data based on the geographical boundaries from the Standard Geographical Classification 2016.

The CHSP database does not contain information about residential properties on reserves.
