Electricity supply
The total amount of electricity generated in Canada increased by 1.3% to 636.2 million megawatt-hours (MWh) in 2022, a rise of 7.9 million MWh from the previous year.
This increase was driven by a 3.6% rise (+13.6 million MWh) in hydroelectric generation in 2022. Manitoba (+31.3%; +8.8 million MWh), Ontario (+14.0%; +4.9 million MWh) and Quebec (+0.8%; +1.7 million MWh) saw increased hydroelectric generation.
Among all generation types, hydroelectricity and wind energy accounted for 67.6% of total electricity production. Hydroelectricity remained the largest contributor to Canada's electricity production and generated 61.9% of electricity production in 2022. Quebec produced 51.6% of the hydroelectricity generated in Canada.
Electricity trade
In 2022, total exports of electricity from Canada to the United States increased by 8.3% (+5.0 million MWh). Total imports from the United States increased by 8.5% (+1.1 million MWh) compared with the previous year. The largest exporters of electricity to the United States were Quebec (22.6 million MWh), Ontario (15.7 million MWh) and British Columbia (12.1 million MWh). British Columbia remained the largest importer of electricity, importing 8.8 million MWh of electricity from the United States.
Electricity use
In 2022, sales volumes of electricity delivered to end-use consumers increased by 0.6% to 495.9 million MWh, compared with 2021. Total sales' dollar value increased to $48.9 billion in 2022, an increase of 3.7%. Among the customer segments, the sales volumes for residential (+3.8%) and agriculture (+0.1%) rose year over year. End-user electricity sales volumes in mining and manufacturing (+7.5%) and other sales (+1.8%) also increased.
