Canada's population estimates and demographic dependency ratio: Health regions and peer groups, July 1, 2022

Released: 2023-03-02

Population estimates and demographic dependency ratio by health region and peer groups on July 1, 2022, are now available. Revised estimates for July 1 of 2020 and 2021 are also available.

The estimates released today are based on 2016 Census counts, adjusted for census net undercoverage and incompletely enumerated reserves, to which are added the population growth estimates for the period from May 10, 2016, to the date of the estimate. Estimates released today are not to be confused with the 2021 Census population counts released on February 9, 2022.

  Note to readers

This release includes preliminary postcensal population estimates for health regions and peer groups by age and sex as of July 1, 2022. Revised estimates as of July 1 for the years 2020 and 2021 are also available. See the Tables tab for more information.

Health regions represent administrative areas for health service delivery within a province or territory. Health regions have been grouped into "peer groups" to allow for comparisons of health regions with similar demographic and socioeconomic characteristics.

The demographic dependency ratio represents the combined population aged from 0 to 14 years old and the population aged 65 years and older to the population aged from 15 to 64 years old.

The annual period of reference is from July 1 of a certain year to July 1 of the following year. Therefore, 2021/2022 refers to the period from July 1, 2021, to July 1, 2022.
