Prices received by farmers in January for grains, oilseeds, and specialty crops, cattle, hogs, poultry, eggs, and dairy products are now available at the provincial level.

In January, canola prices continued to strengthen in the Western provinces. The increases ranged from 14.8% in Manitoba to 2.5% in Alberta. On a year-over-year basis, canola prices posted an increase across all provinces as a result of tight supply and strong demand.

Dry pea prices trended upwards in January following a month of mixed movements in December. Compared with December 2021, the prices for dry peas increased by 19.8% in Alberta to 21.8% in Saskatchewan due to lower supply and high demand.

After four consecutive months of declines, slaughter hog prices increased in most provinces in January. Compared with January 2021, slaughter hog prices remained strong as a result of high demand.

Month over month, feeder cattle prices posted an increase across provinces ranging from 4.1% in Manitoba to 9.4% in Alberta in January. In addition, slaughter cattle price movements varied across provinces.

  Note to readers
