Two new data sets from the rapid response component of the Canadian Community Health Survey – Annual Component are now available. The first rapid response data are on the topic of 'healthy living' and the second on 'smoking stages of change and tobacco alternatives and vaping.'

  Note to readers

The data for both rapid responses were collected from respondents aged 12 and older from all provinces between January and March 2020.

The rapid response on healthy living collected information from respondents on their sleep patterns, quality, and habits, such as questions on sleep and wake times and use of electronics before sleep. Additional questions were asked about bone and muscle strengthening physical activities, and activities that improve balance. Lastly, respondents were asked about sedentary time while using electronic devices or while at work or school.

The rapid response on smoking stages of change and tobacco alternatives and vaping asked respondents who were current cigarette smokers about their intentions to quit and recent attempts to quit smoking. An additional series of questions was asked of all respondents to assess the use of alternative tobacco products such as cigars, cigarillos, or pipes and included a series of questions on vaping or 'e-cigarette' devices.

The data are now available in the Research Data Centres.

The addition of these questions to the Canadian Community Health Survey was sponsored by the Public Health Agency of Canada (for the content on healthy living) and by Health Canada (for the content on smoking and tobacco alternatives).
