Statistics Canada has launched the Physical flow account for greenhouse gas emissions: Interactive tool. This interactive dashboard offers Canadians the ability to graph greenhouse gas (GHG) emission trends over time for selected industries and household categories. It also displays total GHG emissions for the top five emitting sectors for a selected geography and year and shows the year-over-year changes in total GHG emissions over time.

The dashboard currently displays up to 2017 data and shows what the GHG trends looked like prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. Confinement due to COVID-19 may have an impact on the trends, which can be verified once the data become available.

Statistics Canada has also launched the graphic, Complementary approaches to reporting Canada's greenhouse gas emissions, to explain the similarities and differences between estimates from Statistics Canada's GHG account and the National Inventory Report prepared by Environment and Climate Change Canada.

  Note to readers

Statistics Canada's Physical Flow Accounts record the annual flows of selected natural resources, products and residuals between the Canadian economy and the environment. Data are presented to reflect the activities of industries, households and governments, and follow the classification system of industries and commodities used in Statistics Canada's supply and use tables.

Environment and Climate Change Canada is responsible for producing Canada's official National Inventory Report on Greenhouse Gas Sources and Sinks. This inventory, which fulfills Canada's reporting obligations under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), is consistent with guidelines published by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and is the official benchmark for greenhouse gas emissions in Canada. National inventories under the UNFCCC and the greenhouse gas accounts under the United Nations System of Environmental–Economic Accounting are based on different methodological frameworks that result in different greenhouse gas estimates. For more information on the methodological differences, see Canadian System of Environmental-Economic Accounts - Physical Flow Accounts survey page and the graphic, Complementary approaches to reporting Canada's greenhouse gas emissions.

The dashboard will be continually updated with the most recent data from the physical flow account for greenhouse gas emissions (Table 38-10-0097-01). For a link to the dashboard and more about the latest in energy information in Canada, visit the Canadian Centre for Energy Information website.
