A revised set of preliminary data on the number of confirmed novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases reported by the provincial and territorial health authorities to the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) is now available. The set covers the period from January 15 to April 18, 2020.

This data set includes information for a total of 17,968 Canadians who tested positive for COVID-19 as of April 18, 2020. Data include detailed information on confirmed cases received by PHAC from the provincial and territorial authorities such as suspected travel or community exposure status, hospitalization status, intensive care admission, and health outcome status. Data are also available by demographic characteristics, such as age group and sex.

  Note to readers

Because the COVID-19 pandemic is rapidly evolving, these data are considered preliminary. The data published by Statistics Canada only account for those where a detailed case report was submitted by the provincial or territorial jurisdiction to the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC). Statistics Canada's detailed preliminary confirmed cases will not match the total case reporting done at the provincial and territorial levels, which are reported daily by each jurisdiction and compiled by PHAC. The discrepancy is due to delays associated with the submission of the detailed information, its capture and coding. Hence, Statistics Canada's file on detailed case reporting is a subset of the total counts reported by the health authorities across Canada.

It should also be noted that PHAC does not receive routine updates on patient status and, therefore, the data may underestimate the number of hospitalizations, admissions to intensive care units and deaths.

For Statistics Canada, a confirmed case of COVID-19 is a case for which PHAC received a report of a confirmed case from provincial and territorial partners.

As part of its continued commitment to provide Canadians with much-needed information during the COVID-19 pandemic, Statistics Canada partnered with PHAC to make preliminary information on the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases available to the public.

The table, "Detailed preliminary confirmed cases of COVID-19, Canada" shows detailed case information such as suspected travel or community exposure status, hospitalization status, intensive care admission, and health outcome status. This information is available by demographic characteristics of age group and sex.
