Poultry and egg statistics, October 2018

Stocks of frozen poultry meat in cold storage increased 5.8% from October 1, 2017, to 90 930 tonnes on October 1, 2018. Ontario continued to hold the largest share of frozen poultry meat stocks, accounting for 49.4% of stocks on October 1, 2018, compared with 43.1% on October 1, 2017.

In September, placements of hatchery chicks on farms decreased 1.4% compared with September 2017 to 65.8 million birds. Over the same period, placements of turkey poults increased 0.2% to 2.0 million birds.

Continuing its steady growth on a year-over-year basis, egg production rose 3.7% from August 2017 to 67.6 million dozen in August. The farm price of eggs increased 6.5% year over year to 162.9 cents/dozen. Newfoundland and Labrador had the highest price (194.3 cents/dozen) and Quebec the lowest (152.8 cents/dozen).
