Gross sales of gasoline for which road taxes were paid have been stable over the last two years. In 2017, gross sales of gasoline declined 0.3% to 44.9 billion litres following a 1.1% increase in 2016.
Quebec (+394.3 million litres) had the largest increase in volume for gross sales of gasoline among the provinces, while British Columbia (-587.6 million litres) had the largest decline.
Ontario, Quebec, British Columbia and Alberta, the four most populous provinces, continued to account for most of the total volume of gas sold. In 2017, their combined share of gasoline consumption reached 84.0% of total volumes.
Nationally, the net sales of diesel oil increased 5.9% to 18.0 billion litres. Every province and territory except for Newfoundland and Labrador (-0.6%) and Yukon (-1.7%) had higher net sales of diesel oil.

Survey data are used by the Department of Finance for the calculation of fiscal equalization payments to the provinces pursuant to the Federal-Provincial Fiscal Arrangements Act and territorial financing for the territories.
