Aircraft movement statistics: Small airports, January 2018
Take-offs and landings at 128 Canadian airports without air traffic control towers reached a total of 33,772 movements in January.
Ten airports accounted for 39% of the month's activity: Peterborough, Ontario (2,587 movements); Goose Bay, Newfoundland and Labrador (1,886); Red Lake, Ontario (1,549); Pickle Lake, Ontario (1,505); Comox, British Columbia (1,241); Island Lake, Manitoba (1,111); Moosonee, Ontario (865); St. Theresa Point, Manitoba (826); Trois-Rivières, Quebec (794); and Dryden Regional, Ontario (734).
Total aircraft movements for the 127 airports for which year-over-year comparisons were possible increased 3.8%, up from 32,411 in January 2017 to 33,658 in January 2018, as 75 airports reported more movements. The largest increases were recorded at the following airports: Peterborough (+510 movements), Pickle Lake (+423) and Island Lake (+301). Among those airports with decreases, the largest decline was reported at Yorkton Municipal, Saskatchewan (-188).
In January 2018, 110 airports reported 26,475 itinerant movements (flights from one airport to another), with Goose Bay (1,886) and Red Lake (1,503) recording the largest activity.
Forty-one airports reported 5,153 local movements (flights that remain in the vicinity of the airport). Peterborough was the most active site with 2,144 take-offs and landings, representing 42% of the total local movements reported.

This survey collects data on itinerant and local aircraft movements at airports without a NAV CANADA Air Traffic Control Tower or a NAV CANADA Flight Service Station.
An aircraft movement is defined as a take-off, a landing, or a simulated approach by an aircraft.
Data for the same month in the previous year may have been revised.
Annual estimates are released each year.
The data in this monthly release are not seasonally adjusted.
