Aircraft movements, total movements

356,096

January 2018

-3.4% decrease

(year-over-year change)

There were 356,096 aircraft take-offs and landings at the 91 Canadian airports with NAV CANADA air traffic control towers and flight service stations in January, compared with 368,525 movements in January 2017.

In January, a reduction in both local movements (flights that remain in the vicinity of the airport) and itinerant movements (flights from one airport to another) contributed to the year-over-year decrease. Local movements declined 8.5% to 87,969 and itinerant movements fell 1.5% to 268,127 .

Domestic itinerant movements (within Canada) declined to 213,751 in January, down 2.5% from the same month the previous year. Transborder movements (between Canada and the United States) increased 0.8% to 37,238 movements, while other international traffic rose 6.0% to 17,138 movements.

In January, 10 airports accounted for 45% of total activity. Toronto/Lester B. Pearson International, Ontario, the nation's busiest airport, reported 37,736 movements, up 1.2% compared with January 2017. This was followed by Vancouver International, British Columbia, which was virtually unchanged at 25,455 movements and Calgary International, Alberta, with 19,261 movements (+2.6%).
