For-hire Motor Carrier Freight Services Price Index, first quarter 2026

The For-hire Motor Carrier Freight Services Price Index (FHMCFSPI) measures monthly and quarterly movements in the prices of services provided by national for-hire carriers.

Data are available at the Canada level only.

With each release, data for the previous quarter may have been revised. The index is not seasonally adjusted.

With the release of the first quarter of 2026 data on May 29, 2026, the FHMCFSPI incorporates updates to the sample and to the basket weights.

To support the continued quality and relevance of the FHMCFSPI, the sample has been expanded by including additional establishments and removing those that no longer meet the selection criteria. This ensures that the sample remains representative of the target population, allows for the collection of a greater number of price quotes, and improves the reliability of the index.

In addition, the basket weights have been updated so that the FHMCFSPI reflects current market conditions and economic activity within the truck transportation subsector. This includes revising the economic weight associated with each establishment, which is based on establishment revenue. These weights are now derived from the 2025 Statistics Canada Business Register. Since establishment-level economic weights are aggregated to calculate the corresponding industry-level weights, this approach has also revised industry weights.

With the introduction of the new basket in the first quarter of 2026, historical estimates are chain-linked to the new basket to maintain continuity in the series.
