Census of Environment launches the Ecosystem Profile Explorer tool and releases new data for selected climate variables
Released: 2026-03-30
The Census of Environment is happy to announce the launch of the product Census of Environment Ecosystem Profile Explorer, which allows users to look at maps of select regions across Canada, providing detailed data tables for each region. The latest data tables will be made available in this tool as new releases occur.
Canada is heating up, especially in northwestern ecosystems
Air temperatures have been increasing across Canada since 1971.
The most significant increases were in northern regions and they were particularly pronounced in winter.
For example, from 1971 to 2020, the average annual temperature rose by 2.5 degrees Celsius in the ecoprovince of Old Crew–Eagle Plains. In winter, the average temperature rose by 3.9 degrees Celsius in this northwestern region on the Canada–Alaska border.
Note to readers
Statistics Canada's Census of Environment program reports on ecosystems in Canada, providing information to help Canadians make evidence-based decisions to protect, rehabilitate, enhance and sustain our environment. It follows the internationally accepted environmental-economic standard for producing information on ecosystems' extent, their condition and the services they provide.
Long-term data on changes in select climate variables are now available in tables 38-10-0197 and 38-10-0198 by ecoprovince and drainage region. Changes in air temperature and precipitation are reported for the following periods: 1971 to 2000, 1971 to 2005, 1971 to 2010, 1971 to 2015 and 1971 to 2020. These tables present data on the condition of Canada's terrestrial ecosystems.
