Crushing statistics of major oilseeds, Canada and United States, 2025

Canadian oilseed processors crushed a record 11.6 million tonnes of canola in 2025, up 1.6% from 2024, marking the third consecutive annual record. High levels of domestic crushing were likely attributable to a record canola harvest in 2025 (13.3% above 2024), combined with a drop in exports (12.5% lower than in 2024).
The production of canola oil rose 1.1% to 4.9 million tonnes in 2025, while canola meal output increased 2.7% to 6.8 million tonnes.
Just over half of the canola grown in Canada is processed domestically. In the 2024/2025 crop year (from August 2024 to July 2025 for canola), domestic crushers accounted for 50.5% of total canola disposition. Over the same period, exports of canola seed accounted for 41.5% of total disposition.
Once canola seed has been processed into oil by a domestic crusher, it is typically exported, either as crude canola oil (suitable for animal feed or biofuel use) or as refined canola oil (used in human food products such as cooking oil or margarine). In 2025, around two-thirds (65.9%) of the canola oil produced in Canada was exported; of those exports, 56.0% were refined canola oil, while the remaining 44.0% were crude canola oil.
The majority of the canola oil that Canada exports goes to the United States. In 2025, the United States accounted for 76.7% of Canadian exports of canola oil, followed by Mexico, at 7.1%.
In the United States, over the 2025 calendar year, oilseed processors crushed 68.2 million tonnes of soybeans (+7.4% from 2024) and 2.0 million tonnes of canola (-7.8% from 2024). In 2025, oil production totalled 13.4 million tonnes for soybeans and 803 000 tonnes for canola, while meal production reached 50.5 million tonnes for soybeans and 1.2 million tonnes for canola.
