Open Database of Greenhouses

Released: 2025-08-18

The Open Database of Greenhouses (ODG) version 2.0 is now available as part of Statistics Canada's Linkable Open Data Environment initiative.

The second version of the database contains approximately 3,900 manually digitized greenhouses from 38 municipalities and four provinces across Canada. Greenhouses identified within open-source Earth observation imagery are digitized in relation to the image, and the geographic datasets are then combined for a collective dataset across Canada.

In the newest version of the database, an additional 1,006 greenhouse footprints were automatically detected and digitized with machine learning methods from high-resolution imagery developed by Statistics Canada through the application of super resolution methods to open-source medium-resolution imagery.

The database leverages both open and publicly available data. The ODG is provided as open data under the Open Government Licence – Canada.

For more information, see the ODG version 2.0.

  Note to readers

The Open Database of Greenhouses was made possible by the ongoing efforts of organizations that produce and maintain open data. It was also made possible by the cooperation between Statistics Canada and organizations that have either given permission to include their publicly available data or directly provided their data for release as open data. The contribution and help of these organizations are gratefully acknowledged.
