Launch of the Rural and Small Town Canada Interactive Dashboards
Released: 2024-05-30
Today, Statistics Canada is launching a new suite of interactive dashboards on the Rural Canada Statistics portal in response to the growing call for granular and location-specific data.
The Rural and Small Town Canada Interactive Dashboards aim to offer comprehensive insights into the dynamic social, economic and environmental landscape of rural and small town (RST) Canada. This series includes five interactive dashboards focused on (1) the number and size of communities, (2) business counts, (3) business conditions, (4) trade, and (5) employment insurance beneficiaries.
These dashboards represent a step forward in improving accessibility to RST data, providing a user-friendly and easily navigable interface. Tailored for policymakers, government agencies, researchers, non-profit organizations, businesses, and individuals seeking to understand RST areas, the dashboards offer valuable data analyses focused on rural environments, fostering a deeper understanding of the opportunities and challenges faced by RST communities.

Note to readers
Number and size of communities in rural and small town Canada
This dashboard allows users to explore the number and size of communities based on two definitions of "rural," including that of rural and small town (RST)—i.e., census subdivisions (CSDs) outside census metropolitan areas (CMAs) or census agglomerations—and that of rural areas (areas outside population centres) according to the Census of Population Program.
Business counts in rural and small town Canada
This dashboard allows users to gain insights on economic activity in RST Canada by visualizing data on the count of employer and non-employer businesses by geography (Canada, province or territory, RST, functional urban area), industry and employment size, with added granularity provided by a map displaying employer businesses by industry at the CSD level.
Business conditions in rural and small town Canada
This dashboard allows users to examine businesses conditions in RST Canada based on the quarterly results from the Canadian Survey on Business Conditions, including business expectations, obstacles, supply chain challenges, debt and future outlook.
Trade in rural and small town Canada
This dashboard allows users to discover data on the number of establishments importing and exporting goods and the value of trade, by geography (non-CMA, CMA, Canada) and industry.
Employment insurance beneficiaries in rural and small town Canada
