Index of Remoteness, 2021

The 2021 update of the dataset that provides an Index of Remoteness for all communities (census subdivisions) of Canada is now available. The Index of Remoteness is determined by the distance that separates a community from all the population centres in a given travel radius, as well as the population size of these centres.

The Index of Remoteness dataset contains the following information for all communities (census subdivisions) of Canada: census subdivision name and unique identifier, total population, type of census subdivision and Index of Remoteness value. The index is computed using 2021 Census of Population counts and geographic boundaries.
