Stocks of frozen and chilled meats totalled 141 893 tonnes as of October 1, 2022, declining for the second consecutive quarter (-4.5% from July 1, 2022), yet remaining 7.3% higher than one year ago (October 1, 2021).
Stocks of frozen and chilled pork continued to account for the largest amount of frozen and chilled meats available in Canada (79 608 tonnes), followed by stocks of frozen and chilled beef (42 147 tonnes).
Lower demand for pork exports since October 1, 2021, may have contributed to an 11.2% year-over-year increase in stocks of frozen and chilled pork in cold storage facilities as of October 1, 2022. Meanwhile, stocks of frozen and chilled pork were down 11.1% compared with July 1, 2022, possibly due to a decrease in pork imports over the past three months, coupled with lower hog slaughter in August and September 2022 relative to the same period a year earlier.
Stocks of frozen and chilled beef were up 20.7% compared with the same date a year ago (October 1, 2021). Increased imports and decreased exports of beef over the previous six-month period, compared with the same period in 2021, may have contributed to this year-over-year increase. Meanwhile, a decrease in cattle slaughter in the third quarter of 2022 compared with the second quarter may have contributed to a 6.4% decrease in stocks of frozen and chilled beef from July 1 to October 1, 2022.
Quebec held 46.4% of the stocks of frozen and chilled pork (36 964 tonnes) nationally as of October 1, 2022, while Ontario held 46.7% of the stocks of frozen and chilled beef (19 696 tonnes).
