Given the rapidly evolving economic situation, Statistics Canada is providing an advance estimate of sales in the manufacturing sector for May. Advance results indicate that total manufacturing sales fell 2.5% in May. The decline was mainly due to lower sales in the motor vehicle and primary metal industries.

This estimate was calculated based on a weighted response rate of 71.8%. The average final response rate for the survey over the previous 12 months has been 94.1%. As Statistics Canada continues to collect data for the May reference month, this early indicator is subject to a higher revision rate than our regular monthly release.

  Note to readers

The percentage change is calculated using seasonally adjusted data in current dollars.

This flash estimate is a special product published in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic to provide Canadians with timely information on the manufacturing sector. The official estimate of manufacturing sales for the month of May, which will be based on a more complete set of survey and administrative data, is scheduled for release on July 14, 2022.
