Prices received by farmers in April for grains, oilseeds, specialty crops, cattle, hogs, poultry, eggs, and dairy products are now available at the provincial level.

In April 2022, canola prices continued to strengthen in all provinces producing this commodity. For instance, all Western provinces recorded their seventh consecutive month-over-month growth. Tightening supplies and the robust global demand for vegetable oils supported the price increases. Compared with April 2021, canola prices posted gains of over 40.0%. Meanwhile, soybean prices also rose, up at least 14.2% in April 2022 compared with the same month a year earlier.

Wheat excluding durum prices trended upwards across Canada in April 2022, ranging from a 1.0% month-over-month increase in Ontario to a 10.0% incline in Quebec. Tight supplies, a higher quality crop and supply chain disruptions resulting from geopolitical uncertainty contributed to the higher price of wheat.

In April 2022, slaughter hog prices experienced a decline in Quebec, down 16.0% from March 2022. Backlogs in slaughter hogs as a result of labour challenges as well as some plants dedicating more resources away from slaughter into further processing have put pressure on Quebec slaughter hog prices. In an effort to reduce backlogs and to ensure that there are no further short-term reductions in slaughter capacity, a temporary agreement between Quebec hog producers and processors was reached on March 31, 2022 to reduce hog prices. The remaining Canadian provinces recorded slight increases in slaughter hog prices led by Alberta (+3.6%), which returned to a single digit month-over-month increases after two consecutive months of double-digit growth across all provinces.

Slaughter cattle prices varied across provinces in April 2022 compared with March 2022, ranging from a 1.6% decline to a 4.7% gain. British Columbia (+4.7%) and Alberta (+2.4%) led the increases, while Quebec (-1.6%) experienced the largest decrease. On the contrary, slaughter calves prices in Quebec rose the most, posting a 10.3% gain since March 2022.
