Stocks of frozen and chilled meats in cold storage totalled 157 860 tonnes as of April 1, 2022, up 9.5% from one year earlier (April 1, 2021).
Stocks of frozen and chilled pork continued to account for the largest amount of frozen and chilled meats available in Canada (93 103 tonnes), followed by stocks of frozen and chilled beef (43 207 tonnes).
Lower demand for pork exports may have contributed to the 20.7% year-over-year increase in stocks of frozen and chilled pork in cold storage facilities, as of April 1, 2022.
Stocks of frozen and chilled beef were down 13.1% compared with April 1, 2021. A 9.8% year-over-year increase in beef exports may have contributed to this decline. In addition, with the easing of COVID-19 lockdown measures throughout Canada, demand for beef from food service sectors may have been higher than usual.
Quebec held 44.0% of the stocks of frozen and chilled pork (40 929 tonnes) nationally as of April 1, 2022, while Alberta held 43.2% of the stocks of frozen and chilled beef (18 661 tonnes).
