Stocks of frozen and chilled meats in cold storage totalled 132 269 tonnes as of October 1, 2021, up 9.1% from a year ago (October 1, 2020).
Stocks of frozen and chilled pork continued to account for the largest amount of frozen and chilled meats available in Canada (71 569 tonnes), followed by stocks of frozen and chilled beef (34 910 tonnes).
Stocks of frozen and chilled pork in cold storage facilities were up 3.7% year over year as of October 1, 2021, and were up 13.1% from July 1, 2021. Stocks of fancy pork as of October 1, 2021 also grew to 16 800 tonnes (+169.4%) compared with the same period a year earlier. An increase in hog slaughter in September 2021, particularly as processing disruptions in Eastern Canada eased, may have contributed to the increase in stocks.
Compared with July 1, 2021, the October 1, 2021 stocks of frozen and chilled beef were down 5.8%. Strong export demand for beef may have contributed to this decline.
Quebec held just over one-half of the stocks of frozen and chilled pork (36 761 tonnes) nationally as of October 1, 2021, while Ontario held 37.5% of the frozen and chilled beef stocks (13 079 tonnes).
