Prices received by farmers in December for grains, oilseeds, specialty crops, cattle, hogs, poultry, eggs and dairy products are now available at the provincial level.

Slaughter hog prices declined in December for the second consecutive month. Prices at the provincial level were 8.5% to 17.8% lower than in November 2020. Meanwhile, price movements across the provinces were varied from November to December for both slaughter and feeder cattle.

Dry pea prices rose in December for a third consecutive month. Both lentil and dry pea prices have increased year over year since April 2020 as a result of strong exports.

Similarly, oilseed prices continued to follow an upward trend, supported by strong exports. Compared with December 2019, canola prices were 11.2% to 18.7% higher across provinces, while soybean prices were 16.1% to 21.1% higher.

  Note to readers

The prices of over 35 commodities are available by province, with some data series going back 40 years. Price data are extracted from administrative files and derived from Statistics Canada surveys.
