New 2019 information on stillbirths is available today from the Canadian Vital Statistics – Stillbirth Database.

In 2019, there were 3,191 fetal deaths (stillbirths) in Canada where the fetus was at 20 weeks or more of gestation, resulting in a fetal death rate of 8.6 per 1,000 total births (live births and fetal deaths).

  Note to readers

The Vital Statistics – Stillbirth Database is an administrative survey that collects demographic and medical information annually from all provincial and territorial vital statistics registries on all stillbirths (fetal deaths) in Canada.

The data are used to calculate basic indicators (such as counts and rates) on stillbirths to Canadian resident women. Information from this database is also used in the calculation of statistics, such as the late fetal death rate and the perinatal death rate.

The duration of data collection for 2016 to 2019 was shortened compared with previous years. These data are therefore considered preliminary. Data will be revised in subsequent releases.

Data for 2017, 2018 and 2019 on stillbirths occurring in Yukon are not available. To avoid confusion, data for these same years for stillbirths to residents of Yukon that occurred in other provinces and territories, were also suppressed.
