The Farm Input Price Index increased 1.1% in the second quarter.

Four of the five major input categories were up, with animal production (+2.0%) and machinery and motor vehicles (+2.1%) accounting for most of the increase.

Crop production (-0.9%) was the only major input to post a decline.

Ontario (+2.0%) and Quebec (+2.4%) contributed the most to the national rise. Higher prices for animal production inputs were the main source of increase in these provinces.

Year over year, farm input prices were up 2.7%, led by higher prices for crop production (+4.4%).

Compared with the second quarter of 2018, the index rose in almost every province. Saskatchewan (+4.1%), Alberta (+2.4%) and Ontario (+2.7%) led the increase. British Columbia (-0.6%) was the only province to post a year-over-year decline.

  Note to readers

The Farm Input Price Index is an indicator of the change in input costs faced by Canadian farmers. The indexes are not seasonally adjusted.

The indexes are available for 13 geographic areas: each of the 10 provinces, Eastern Canada (Newfoundland and Labrador, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec and Ontario), Western Canada (Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia), and the Canada total (excluding the territories).

The Farm Input Price Index is subject to an eight-quarter revision period after dissemination of a given quarter's data.
