Aircraft movement statistics: Small airports, March 2019

Take-offs and landings at 126 Canadian airports without air traffic control towers reached 44,278 movements in March.

Ten airports accounted for 39.0% of the month's activity: Peterborough, Ontario (3,677 movements); Goose Bay, Newfoundland and Labrador (2,241); Trois-Rivières, Quebec (1,909); Barrie-Orillia-Lake Simcoe Regional, Ontario (1,826); Drummondville, Quebec (1,689); Red Lake, Ontario (1,424); Moosonee, Ontario (1,177); Yorkton, Saskatchewan (1,167); Comox, British Columbia (1,090); and Pickle Lake, Ontario (1,074).

Total aircraft movements for the 124 airports for which year-over-year comparisons were possible increased 2.8%, from 42,985 in March 2018 to 44,197 in March 2019, with 61 airports reporting greater movements. The largest increases were recorded at the following airports: Yorkton (+750 movements), Barrie-Orillia-Lake Simcoe Regional (+744) and Drummondville (+366). Among those airports with decreases, the largest decline was reported at Amos Municipal (-430).

In March, 107 airports reported 31,224 itinerant movements (flights from one airport to another), with Goose Bay (2,241 movements) and Red Lake (1,332) recording the largest numbers.

Meanwhile, 45 airports reported 10,854 local movements (flights that remain in the vicinity of the airport). Peterborough was the most active site with 3,350 take-offs and landings, representing 30.9% of the total local movements reported.

This survey collects data on itinerant and local aircraft movements at airports without a NAV CANADA air traffic control tower or a NAV CANADA flight service station.

An aircraft movement is defined as a take-off, a landing, or a simulated approach by an aircraft.

Data for the same month in the previous year may have been revised.

Annual estimates are released each year.

Data in this monthly release are not seasonally adjusted.
