The Canada and the World Statistics Hub brings together data from a number of Statistics Canada products and presents the information in a single interactive analytical product. The Statistics Hub makes it easier for users to find and analyze the wealth of information that Statistics Canada publishes related to Canada's economic and financial activity with the world.
The first release of the Canada and the World Statistics Hub focuses on Canada's economic and financial relationship with the United States, Canada's most important trading partner. The information is presented according to four main topics: trade, investment, employment and travel. Key indicators are available for each of the topics, including merchandise trade by Canadian provinces and US states, trade in services, value-added exports, foreign direct investment, foreign affiliate statistics and much more.
The Statistics Hub also provides links to more detailed data and information regarding definitions, concepts and methods.
Similar data for other countries will be added to the Canada and the World Statistics Hub in the future.
Note to readers
In principle, the bilateral international accounts of one country should mirror those of its trading partners. In practice, this is rarely the case as countries use different data sources and different statistical methods, and may apply international standards differently.
In the case of Canada and the United States, generally, bilateral merchandise trade statistics are comparable because the two countries have a data sharing arrangement. Namely, Canada's import data are the basis of US export data and vice-versa. Nonetheless, differences can arise. These differences can be attributed to factors such as different revision policies and differences in the treatment of re-exports (returned goods).
Differences also exist in other bilateral statistics, such as services and investment, where no data sharing agreement is in place between Canada and the United States. While both countries generally comply with international standards for the compilation of their international accounts, differences in bilateral data exist due mainly to valuation, timing and coverage issues arising from the use of different data sources and statistical methods.
