Canadian Level I to III air carriers reported 71.7 million enplaned passengers in 2014, up 6.4% from 2013.
The domestic sector rose 6.2% to 39.8 million passengers, while the international sector (including between Canada and the United States) grew 6.6% to 31.9 million passengers. The passenger counts on scheduled flights rose 5.6% to 64.1 million, while the number of passengers flying on chartered flights increased 13.0% to 7.6 million.
Total operating revenues rose 7.6% from the previous year to $22.3 billion in 2014. Total operating expenses increased 6.3% to $20.6 billion.
In 2014, 92.5 cents of each operating revenue dollar were used to cover operating expenses. Aircraft operations accounted for the largest portion of each dollar, at 48.9 cents, followed by general services and administration (28.8 cents) and maintenance (10.5 cents).
Total employment in the aviation industry declined 0.3% to 54,770, while total wages and salaries increased 2.2% from 2013 to $3.8 billion. Wages and salaries accounted for 18.5% of the industry's total operating expenses in 2014, down from 19.3% in 2013.
