Highlights

  1. On July 1, 2008, Canada’s population was estimated at 33,311,400, up 125,800 from April 1, 2008.
  1. In the April-June 2008 period, Canada’s population grew by 0.38%, the largest increase since the 2nd quarter of 1991, all quarters combined.
  1. As a result of sustained immigration and a record increase in the number of non-permanent residents, Canada’s net international migration rose to 91,600 individuals, a new high for a 2nd quarter.
  1. Demographic growth remains strongest in the west. The population growth in each of the four provinces west of Ontario surpassed the national rate.
  1. Alberta remained the province with the strongest population growth. In the second quarter of 2008, it dominated the provinces in terms of natural increase and international migration. The province also posted a much higher interprovincial net migration than in the second quarter of 2007.
