Updated breast cancer costs for women by disease stage and phase of care using population-based databases

Breast cancer represents 26% of new cancer cases in women, with around 30,000 diagnoses in Canada in 2023. Managing breast cancer involves a range of health care settings and has considerable implications on health care resources. While studies have looked at breast cancer costs in Canada by subtype and stage, there is a gap in understanding breast cancer costs related to phase of care and disease stage. This study assessed health care system costs and resource utilization for adult women with breast cancer in Ontario, Canada. The goal was to update costs by stage, age, and phase of care from a health care system perspective.

Adolescence and early adulthood represent particularly critical periods for the onset of mental health symptoms, with many mental illnesses first developing before the age of 24. Youth who are Two-Spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer or who use other terms related to gender or sexual diversity (2SLGBTQ+ [Appendix Note 1]) are at particular risk for mental health difficulties, including mood and anxiety disorders, substance use, self-harm, and suicidality.
