Description for Figure 1

This figure shows how a typical Canadian Census Health and Environment Cohort is created by applying a series of exclusion criteria to individuals who were enumerated by the census of population.

Individuals not enumerated by the census are excluded.

Next, individuals living overseas at time of census are excluded.

Next, individuals living in institutions at time of census are excluded.

Next, individuals who were not linked to the Derived Record Depository are excluded.

Next, individuals who were linked to the Derived Record Depository and to a death record that occurred before census day were excluded.

Next, census individuals’ who were matched to the same DRD record were excluded.

In the end, the final cohort consists of those who were not excluded in any of the previous steps and were long-form census respondents.

Applying the cohort weight to the final cohort produces estimates representative of the non-institutional population living in Canada at the time of census.
