Description for Figure 1
Contents of the Canadian Active Living Environment (Can-ALE) dataset
Individual measures
Connectivity: 3-way intersection density of roads and footpaths derived from OpenStreetMap
Density: Weighted dwelling density derived from the 2016 Census (Statistics Canada)
Destinations: Number of points of interest (e.g. shops, parks, businesses) derived from OpenStreetMap
Transit stops: Number of transit stops or stations derived from various sources for census metropolitan areas
Summary measures
ALE index: Continuous measure of the favourability of the active living environment based on the summed z-scores of the connectivity, density and destinations measures
ALE Class: Categorical measure of the active living environment based on a five-category, k-medians cluster of the connectivity, density and destinations measures
ALE Transit Index: Similar in principle to the ALE index, but with the inclusion of the transit measure z-score
ALE Transit Class: Similar in principle to the ALE class, but with the inclusion of transit stops as a cluster factor
